| Buddy sez: I yam humbled that Rhino decided to anthologize the band; almost makes me feel like we made a difference or sumpin. In listening to this, I'm amazed at the amount of great work the Beat Farmers churned out in three years (he says immodestly). |

| Buddy sez: Farmers fans love this CD - me, I'm kinda embarrassed by it because I was very young when it was recorded and not yet the quivering music stud you know and worship today. It's a lot of fun though, and great memories for those who saw the Farmers way back when. |

"Sordid Lives"
Buddy Blue
Bizarre/Planet Records, 2003
|
- Upsettin' Me
- Conversation With The Bottle
- Horn Rims
- Jesse's Back In Town
- Uptown At Minton's
- St. James Infirmary
- Monk Side Story
|
- Nobody
- Baby's Got The Blues
- Blues In The Night
- Pray For Rain
- Slim Jam
- Wretch's Lament
|
| Buddy sez: With the benefit of hindsight, it was probably a bad idea to record an all-jazz album, but that's what Bizarre/Planet Records wanted so that's what I gave 'em. Although this isn't an always-successful experiment, I still like most of it and am particularly happy with "St. James Infirmary" and the cool, smoky version of "Upsettin' Me." |

"Pretend It's Okay"

Clarence Records, 2001
|

|
- My Sunday Feeling

|
Buddy sez: The great thing about recording for your own label is the ability to put roadhouse rock, old-timey blues, a Civil War anthem, rockabilly rave-ups, jump/swing thrummers and a Jethro Tull cover all on the same album, confusing everyone concerned. Young John Skalman's swell cover painting further disturbed many people. Truly a fine effort all around! Features guest stars Judy Henske, Craig Doerge, Chris Gaffney, Billy Bacon, Mighty Joe Longa and Freddie Brooks.

"Dipsomania!"
Buddy Blue
Clarence Records, 2000

- Upsettin' Me
- Monk Side Story

- Fat, Forty 'n' Flatulent
- Milky Way Blues
- Kick, Bite & Scream
- That's What I Like About The South

- Lady Mekhong
- Dipsomanic Emission
- That Yodelin' Hateful Rag
- Goodbye Little Boy
- What Is That Tastes Like Gravy
- The Joe Marillo Story (hidden bonus track)
|
| Buddy sez: This is my best-selling solo album and I was piss drunk on rye whiskey the whole time the tape was rolling. What does that tell you? I don't even remember recording "Daddy's Drinkin'" and don't think I'll ever play slide guitar that well again. I'm not sure the guitar solo on "Monk Side Story" was really me, either. I love this CD, it's probably my fave. Features guest stars Dave Alvin, Billy Zoom, Lee Rocker, Joe Marillo and the mammalicious Romy Kaye.

"Greasy Jass"
Buddy Blue Clarence Records, 1997 Out Of Print
|
- High 5n White Boy
- Mucus Man
- Slim Jam
- Horn Rims
- Drunk Again
- Blues In The Night
|
- Pray For Rain
- Jumpin' At Pete's Place
- Ball Tonight
- Conversation With The Bottle
- Minor Buzz
- Headed Uptown
- Wretch's Lament
|
| Buddy sez: This was the first release on my baby, Clarence Records. It was never distributed outside San Diego and is probably the hardest Buddy Blue CD to find a copy of. I'm real proud of most of it but there's a couple clunkers that make me wince today. Still, a nice cohesive blend of swing, jump, blues and jazz, and Mary Fleener's bitchen-ass artwork is a big plus, too. |

"Dive Bar Casanovas"
The Buddy Blue Band
Bizarre/Planet Records, 1994
Out Of Print
|
- Right Cross, Left Hook
- I Get A Chill
- Baby's Got The Blues
- Kill The Dutchman
- The Boys From Syracuse
|
- Check That Chicken
- It Should Have Been Me
- Nobody
- Frim Fram Froo
- Bump Miss Suzie
- Going Downtown
|
| Buddy sez: It's unfortunate that this album is so stinky because it features some of the best songs I've ever written. Unfortunately, me and much of the band were still trying to grasp the vocabulary and feel for swing when this was recorded, and the in-your-face production puts an ugly exclamation point on that. Some day, I'll record "Baby's Got The Blues" and "Nobody" and get 'em right.

 |
"Guttersnipes 'n' Zealots"
Buddy Blue Rhino/RNA Records, 1991 Out Of Print
|
- No Right To Die
- Hey Morris
- Blind Monkeys
- The Duke Of J Street
- Gun Sale At The Church
- Somethin' Inhuman
|
- Someone You Knew
- Saturday Night
- Anyway
- Upsettin' Me
- Lazy Blues
- Prowlin' Tomcat Blues
|
|
Buddy sez: This is schizo as shit, with some of the hardest rock I ever laid down co-existing with old-timey yodeling, '50s R&B, acoustic blues and a depressing ballad about dead people. Guests include Dave Alvin, Richard Berry, Merrill Moore, Mojo Nixon, Tomcat Courtney and Mike Keneally, plus cover art by legendary Zap Comix guy, Spain Rodriguez.

 |
"Jacks Are Wild!"
The Jacks Rounder Records, 1988 Available on cassette only
|
- For The Night
- I Don't Care
- Can You Feel It
- Lost On The Way
- De-Motivated
|
- Lemme Feel Ya
- Mama's Boy
- Missing You
- Something Funny Goin' On
- My Old Neighborhood
|
| Buddy sez: I love this album; many are less enthused by it. I'll admit it sounds pretty dated today, in a "We're-Gonna-Be-A-Cross-Between-The-Rascals-And-Springsteen" grandiose '80s kinda way, but there's a lotta great songs and performances on this sucker. Unfortunately, I sang through my nose the whole time, for reasons I can't seem to recall. |

"Van Go"
The Beat Farmers
Curb/MCA, 1986
Available in stores and on the web
|
- Riverside
- Deceiver
- Powderfinger
- Seven Year Blues
- Blue Chevrolet
|
- I Want You Too
- Road Of Ruin
- Buy Me A Car
- Gun Sale At The Church
- Bigger Fool Than Me
- Big Ugly Wheels
|
| Buddy sez: This is essentially Jerry Raney's album; I was spiritually well on my way out of the Farmers by the time we were recording it. Raney had lots of great tunes on it too, but sadly, Craig Leon's production is so godawful that what could have/should have been a great album is sabotaged by sound quality that seems to be emanating from a $2 transistor radio. The recording of "Gun Sale At The Church" - the only song I wrote here - is particularly awful. Still can't believe this cost 80 grand to record! Do yourself a favor; save your money.

"Glad 'n' Greasy"
The Beat Farmers Rhino Records, 1986 Out of print, last we knew
|
- Powderfinger
- Death Train
- Beat Generation
|
- Glad 'n' Greasy
- Delayed Reaction
- Big Rock Candy Mountain
|
| Buddy sez: Okay, if ever I participated in the creation of a great album, this is it - the Beat Farmers at our best, the only recording that, in my opinion, captures what we sounded like live. The band was at our creative peak, young 'n' stoked 'n' cocky, and producers Bob Andrew and Colin Fairley did a tremendous job. Alas, this is only a six-song EP, recorded in London after a month-long UK tour. The uncredited background vocals on "Beat Generation" were provided by Dave Alvin, Gene Taylor, Dan Stuart and Loudon Wainwright III. |
 |
"Tales Of The New West"
The Beat Farmers Rhino Records, 1985 Out of print, last we knew
|
- Bigger Stones
- There She Goes Again
- Reason To Believe
- Lost Weekend
- Never Goin' Back
- California Kid
|
- Goldmine
- Showbiz
- Lonesome Hound
- Where Do They Go
- Selfish Heart
- Happy Boy
|
| Buddy sez: The Farmers' debut has much great tuneage and energy and is often cited by critics as our best album, although I reserve that designation for "Glad 'n' Greasy." I've vacillated over the years as to how I feel about it, but last time I listened I enjoyed it a whole lot. I just wish the whole she-bang had been produced as well as "Bigger Stones," which was re-done to make it more "radio-friendly." Features a host of '80s roots rock bigshots on background vocals, including Chip and Tony Kinman from Rank & File, Vicki Peterson from the Bangles, Peter Case from the Plimsouls and Sid Griffin from the Long Ryders. |
